I stayed in Santa Teresa mere weeks after hip surgery - it’s so hilly! I remember at the end of every day my hip was screaming at me. But I was young and mostly ignored it, for better or for worse. Fortunately it doesn’t seem to have been for worse.

So sorry you got injured there - being injured really brings life to a halt in a way that few things do. Something I’ve experienced much more than I ever wanted to. A relevant book that I liked about periods of life where we are forced to slow down was Wintering, by Katherine May.

And Brazilians are so friendly! I hope I can make it to Brazil someday again.

Sorry to hear about your injury, it sounds painful and it's always stressful navigating a healthcare system, never mind one in a foreign country. I hope you make a smooth recovery! I still wish I took my rehab and recovery more seriously from my own injury years ago, so wishing all the patience and discipline I lacked.

I also hate having to make "boring" buys...I need new shoes for going to the gym and long walks but I generally don't like how these types of shoes look, and I resent their utter lack of durability. Am putting it off for as long as possible.

Decided to spin the event in my head as : a way to sample more from the country than standard fare tourism. Strangers were kind and helped me for no reason. Brazil will always be remembered for their hospitality to me.

Interesting that you decided to count exercise shoes towards the rule of 5. I wont be.

If on your long walks, you see stylish woman in the city and decide to document it, I am here for it.

Re Brazil: So true! Something I will think about whenever travel throws me for a loop now.

I counted exercise shoes just for the heck of it, even though I think it is excluded from the Rule of Five... I like the thought process the challenge puts me through!

I’m so sorry to hear about your injury :( wishing you a speedy recovery and sorry you had to buy the boring comfy pants. Waistbands are hell for me even at the best of times, so I feel you on that one.

The comfy pants came and I am so so thankful for their presence. How will I go back to a waistband after this?

Thank you for the best wishes.
